대한출판문화협회가 77개 출판 관련 기업과 주요 서점의 매출액, 영업이익 현황 등을 분석한 ‘2022년 출판시장 통계’를 발간했다. 77개 출판 기업의 2022년도 총 매출액은 약 5조 1081억 원으로 전년 대비 2.8% 증가했지만 총 영업이익은 약 2081억 원으로 전년(약 3393억 원) 대비 38.7% 감소했다.

주요 만화·웹툰·웹소설 출판사(9개사)의 2022년 총 매출액은 2231억 원으로 2021년(2102억 원) 대비 6.2% 증가했으며, 2022년 총 영업이익은 약 155억 원으로 2021년(253억 원) 대비 38.7% 감소했다. 주요 전자출판(전자책·웹툰·웹소설) 플랫폼 기업(13개 사)의 매출액은 약 1조 2589억 원으로 전년 대비 30.1% 증가했다.
제2의 한글 창제한 한국 출판역사의 산 증인
이기성 한국전자출판교육원장의 행보가 재조명되고 있다. 이기성 원장은 ‘전자출판’이라는 획기적인 기술의 도입으로 한국 출판계의 새로운 시대를 연 인물이다. 국내 출판계와 인쇄계가 일본 기술의 식민지에서 벗어나도록 한국식 전자출판 시스템 프로그램을 발명하고, 전자출판 교육에 중추적 역할을 담당한 전자출판학계의 ‘살아있는 전설’이자 한국 출판 역사의 산 증인으로, 출판·인쇄 분야의 한글처리표준코드와 한글통신표준코드의 제정 및 보급을 이끌어내며 제2의 한글을 창제했다는 평가를 받고 있다.
1971년 장왕사 편집부 이기성은 동경 TBDC에서 출판연수코오스를 마치고 귀국하여, 출판협회 주최로 출판경영자 세미나를 열고서, 일본에서는 이미 대형 컴퓨터를 이용한 CTS 출판 시스템(Computerized Typesetting System Publishing)이 개발되었으니, 우리 한국 출판계도 본격적으로 컴퓨터 공부를 하고 컴퓨터의 도움을 받는 출판 CAP(Computer Aided Publishing) 시스템을 개발하여야 한다고 발표했다. 그러나 1970년대는 물론 1980년대까지도 한국 출판계에서는 디자인 과정의 컴퓨터화인 CAD(Computer Aided Design)나 컴퓨터를 이용하는 제조 작업인 CAM(Computer Aided Manufacturing, 생산과 제조 분야에서 컴퓨터를 도입한 것)은 이해한다고 하면서도, 조판과 인쇄 분야에서 컴퓨터를 도입하는 것인 전자출판(CAP) 시스템에 대하여는 아직 멀었다고 반대하는 출판, 인쇄 경영자들이 대부분이었다. “어떻게 컴퓨터가 조판을 하느냐?”면서 잘못 보고 온 것이라고 비협조는 물론, 비웃고 있었다. 미국에서 개인용 컴퓨터를 발명하자, 이번에는 미국 기술을 이용하여 일본이 한국의 조판과 인쇄 시장을 재빨리 석권하였다. 불행하게도 한국 인쇄산업계는 이를 당연한 일로 받아들이고, 전량 일제 기계를 수입해서 사용하기 시작했다.
반면에, 도서출판 장왕사 이기성과 삼민사 편집부 한규면은 값비싼 중대형 컴퓨터가 아닌 개인용컴퓨터를 이용한 한글조판 시스템을 개발했다. ①제일 먼저 개인용컴퓨터용 한글 문서편집기(워드프로세서) 프로그램과 디지털 한글 활자로 원고를 디지털 파일로 작성/저장한다. ②디스켓에 저장된 파일을 불러와서(읽어서) 교정이 완료된 원고에 조판명령을 추가하여 인쇄용 페이지를 조판해내는 프로그램을 개발했다. ③장왕사 편집부에서는 애플II+ 컴퓨터에서 워드프로세서로 작성한 파일에다 조판 명령을 추가한 DTP(탁상출판) 시스템 프로그램 개발에 성공했다. ④삼민사(한규면 프로그램머)는 월간디자인 출판사에서 사용하는 CP/M 운영체제의 입력기 조판 프로그램과 거의 같은 수준의 조판 프로그램 작성에 성공했고, ⑤조판된 원고를 일제 사진출력기에서 인화지에 출력하는데 성공했다. 한편, ⑥한울출판사(김종수 대표)와 오롬컴퓨터(이호열 대표), 서울시스템(이웅근 회장)이 출력기 엔진에서 한글폰트를 출력하는 시스템 개발에 성공함으로, 수입 기계에 전적으로 의존하던 한국 인쇄계와 출판계가 일본 인쇄산업계로부터 독립할 수 있게 되었다.
뚱보강사의 칼럼 모음집 <이기성 칼럼집> 출간
지난 3월, 이기성 원장은 일명 뚱보강사의 칼럼 모음집인 <이기성 칼럼집>을 출간했다. 현재까지 300만부를 돌파한 <컴퓨터는 깡통이다-1, -2>를 비롯해 <출판은 깡통이다>, <출판개론>, <유비쿼터스와 출판>, <한글디자인 해례와 폰트 디자인>, <전자출판론(CAP)>, <타이포그래피와 한글 활자> 등 총 81권의 저서를 집필한 바 있다. A4용지 총 3886쪽 분량의 <이기성 칼럼집>은 650쪽씩 6개로 나누어 6권으로 제책되었다. <이기성 칼럼집>은 2011년 1학기(8월 말) 계원조형예술대학교에서 정년퇴임하고 명예교수로 취임한 후부터 시작하여 금년 2023년 1월말 656회 칼럼까지 12년간 ‘경기고 60회 홈 페이지 우리마당’의 <동기칼럼>에 실린 글을 모은 것이다. 우리는 오랜 역사와 4계절이 있는 자연환경으로 무궁한 이야깃거리(줄거리, 내용, story, contents)가 있는 문화를 향유하고 있기 때문에 우수한 IT 실력과 다양한 콘텐츠가 합치면 미래의 한국 출판 산업은 K-POP을 능가하는 K-출판 시대가 도래할 것이라는 이기성 원장. 그는 “수천 년 활자 역사와 무궁무진한 콘텐츠가 스마트 모바일 기기 등의 지원과 다양한 힘을 얻는다면 막강한 경쟁력을 갖게 될 것”이라며 “앞으로도 학술 서적 집필에 매진함은 물론 올바른 역사의식을 일깨우고 정체성을 살린 출판학계의 발전을 위해 끊임없이 노력하겠다”고 각오를 다졌다. A living witness to Korea's publishing history of creating the second Hangul language
Lee Ki-sung, director of eBook Academy, is in the spotlight. Mr. Lee is credited with ushering in a new era in Korean publishing by introducing the groundbreaking technology of CAP(Computer Aided Publishing). He is a "living legend" in the field of CAP who invented a Korean Computer Aided Publishing system program to help the Korean publishing and printing industry break free from the colonization of Japanese technology, played a pivotal role in CAP education, and is a living witness to the history of Korean publishing, and is credited with creating the second Hangul by leading the establishment and dissemination of the Hangeul Processing Standard Code and the Hangul Communication Standard Code in the publishing and printing fields.
In 1971, Lee Ki-sung, the editorial director of Jangwang, returned from a publishing training course at TBDC in Tokyo and held a seminar for publishing executives sponsored by the Korean Publishing Association, where he announced that since Japan had already developed a CTS publishing system (Computerized Typesetting System Publishing) using large computers, the Korean publishing industry should study computers in earnest and develop a CAP (Computer Aided Publishing) system. However, in the 1970s and even into the 1980s, most publishing and printing executives in Korea said that they understood computer aided design (CAD), the computerization of the design process, and computer aided manufacturing (CAM), the use of computers in production and manufacturing, but that they were still far away from computer aided publishing (CAP), the use of computers in typesetting and printing.
"What the heck, how can a computer do typesetting?" they asked, not only uncooperatively, but also sneeringly. With the invention of the personal computer in the United States, Japan quickly took over the Korean typesetting and printing market, this time using American technology. Unfortunately, the Korean printing industry took this for granted and began to import and use Japanese machines.
On the other hand, Lee Ki-sung of the book publishing company Jangwang and Han Kyu-myeon of the editorial department of Samminsa developed a Hangeul typesetting system using personal computers rather than expensive medium and large computers. ① First, create and save the manuscript as a digital file using a Hangeul document editor (word processor) program for personal computers and digital Hangeul type. ② Lee developed a program that retrieves (reads) the files stored on diskettes and adds typesetting commands to the corrected manuscripts to typeset pages for printing. ③ The editorial department of Jangwang Company successfully developed a DTP (desktop publishing) system program that adds typesetting commands to files created with a word processor on an Apple II+ computer. ④ Programmer Han Kyu-myeon succeeded in writing a typesetting program that was almost as good as the inputter typesetting program of the CP/M operating system used by Monthly Design Publishing, and ⑤ succeeded in printing the typeset manuscript on photo paper(photograph printing paper) from a Japanese photo printer. On the other hand, ⑥ Hanwool Publishing Company(CEO Kim Jong-soo), Orm Computer(CEO Lee Ho-yeol), and Seoul System(Chairman Lee Woong-geun) succeeded in developing a system that outputs Korean fonts from the printer engine, enabling the Korean printing and publishing industry, which was completely dependent on imported machines, to become independent of the Japanese printing industry.
Publication of <Ki Sung Lee's Columns>, a collection of fat lecturer's columns
In March, Lee published a collection of columns by the so-called "fat lecturer, Lee Ki-sung". He has written a total of 81 books, including <Computer is a Tin Can-1 and -2>, which have exceeded 3 million copies to date, <Publishing is a Tin Can>, <Introduction to Publishing>, <Ubiquity and Publishing>, <Hangul Design History and Font Design>, <Theory of Electronic Publishing (CAP)>, and <Typography and Korean Letterpress>. The 3,886-page A4 book, <Lee's Columns>, was divided into six volumes of 650 pages each. <Collected Columns of Lee Ki-sung> is a collection of articles published in the <Alumnus Column> of the 'Gyeonggi 60th Home Page Woorimadang' for 12 years, starting from the first semester of 2011 (end of August) after he retired from Kaywon College of Art and Design and was appointed as an honorary professor, until the 656th column at the end of January 2023.
Since we enjoy a culture with a long history and a natural environment with four seasons, with infinite stories (plots, contents, stories, contents), Lee Ki-sung believes that the combination of excellent IT skills and diverse contents will lead to a future Korean publishing industry that will surpass K-POP. "Thousands of years of history and infinite contents will have a strong competitiveness if they are supported by smart mobile devices and various other forces," he said. "We will continue to strive not only to write academic books, but also to develop the publishing industry with the right sense of history and identity," he added.
