In the age of computerized printing, ⌜fonts⌟ have replaced type. The government standard ⌜Computer Typeface⌟, established and announced by the Ministry of Culture on January 13, 1993, is expected to eliminate the confusion caused by different Korean fonts in different writing programs. We met with Lee Ki-sung (48, professor at Shingu College), chairman of the Korea Electronic Publishing Culture Association(Computer Aided Publishing Society), who was in charge of developing the Hangeul standard font.
"We have developed a font that can print all 11,172 characters of Hangeul, which we use, and this should be seen as the creation of computerized Hangeul, comparable to the creation of Hangeul by King Sejong the Great," he enthused. "Some of the existing computer fonts were developed by Japanese companies, and most of them were created with the intention of writing alongside Chinese characters, but this standard font is unprecedented in that it was developed with only Hangeul horizontal writing in mind, utilizing the excellence of Hangeul."
Professor Lee explained that Choi Jeong-soon (73), a master of Hangeul letterforms, took charge of the standard font to the end despite his advanced age, which was a great help, and based on this, Seoul System (CEO Lee Woong-geun) took over the computerization work and the font was completed.
The new font is similar to the old Myeongjo-che script, but the letters are squared off, the strokes are clear and easy to see, and the strokes are treated with gentle curves so that they do not get tired of looking at them. In particular, following Professor Lee's idea, the original drawing was drawn for each letter for the 2,500 characters that are frequently used, and the remaining 8,000 characters were formed by combining more than 900 consonants and vowels to form the letters, and the ⌜completion-combination compromise method⌟ was adopted to realize both beauty and economy.
The standard font is called ⌜Textbook Bonmoon-che⌟. The Ministry of Culture will supply it free of charge to any Hangeul software company that wants it. "In the current domestic font market, the price of a font for 2,500 Hangeul is 10 million to 50 million won. That is why popular software companies such as ⌜A-rae-a Hangul⌟, which accounts for more than 80 percent of the Hangeul word processor market, ⌜Sa-im-dang⌟ and ⌜Munbang Sau⌟ have already expressed their intention to adopt it." Professor Lee is confident that it is only a matter of time before the government's standard font becomes the standard for computer Hangeul fonts. <reporter Kim Myung-hwan>.

컴퓨터 인쇄 시대에 활자를 대신하는 것이 ⌜폰트⌟다. 1993년 1월 13일 문화부가 제정, 발표한 정부표준규격 ⌜컴퓨터 활자⌟는 그동안 글쓰기 프로그램마다 한글 폰트가 제각각에서 빚어온 혼란을 없앨 것으로 기대된다. 한글표준폰트 개발 작업을 맡았던 이기성 한국전자출판문화회장(48·신구전문대 교수)을 만났다.
“우리가 쓰는 한글 1만 1천1백72자 모두를 출력해낼 수 있는 폰트를 개발했습니다. 이번 작업은 세종대왕의 한글창제에 버금가는 컴퓨터 한글 창제로 보아야 할 것입니다.” 그는 흥분을 감추지 못했다. “기존의 컴퓨터 글씨들 중에는 일본 회사가 개발한 것이 있는가 하면 한자와 어울려쓰기를 의식해 만든 것이 대부분입니다. 그러나 이 표준 폰트는 한글 가로쓰기만을 염두에 두고 개발, 한글의 우수성을 살렸다는 점에서 유례없는 작업입니다.” 이교수는 표준 폰트 글씨꼴을 한글 활자서체의 대가인 최정순옹(73)이 고령임에도 불구하고 끝까지 맡아 큰 힘이 되었으며, 이를 바탕으로 서울시스템(대표 이웅근)이 전산화작업을 맡아 폰트가 완성됐다고 그간의 과정을 설명했다.
새 폰트는 종전의 명조체 글자와 비슷하지만 글자가 네모에 꽉차고 획이 명확하여 눈에 잘 들어오며 여러번 봐도 싫증이 나지 않도록 획을 온화한 곡선으로 처리하는 등 심리적인 면에 까지 신경을 썼다. 특히 이교수의 아이디어에 따라, 자주 쓰이는 2천5백자는 글자마다 원도를 그리고, 나머지 8천여자는 9백여개 자소(字素)를 조합해 글자를 구성하는 ⌜완성-조합 절충방식⌟을 택해 아름다움과 경제성을 함께 살렸다.
표준 폰트의 이름은 ⌜교과서 본문용체⌟. 문화부는 이를 원하는 한글소프트웨어 회사에 무상으로 공급키로 했다. “현재 국내 폰트 시장에서 한글 2천5백여자의 폰트가격은 1천만원~5천만원이나 하지 않습니까. 그 때문인지 한글워드프로세서 시장의 80%이상을 차지하고 있는 ⌜아래아 한글⌟을 비롯하여 ⌜사임당⌟ ⌜문방사우⌟ 등 인기 소프트웨어 회사들이 이미 채택 의사를 밝혔습니다.” 이교수는 정부표준폰트가 컴퓨터 한글 글자체의 표준으로 자리잡는 것은 시간문제라고 자신했다. <김명환기자>
